Darol Anger's Republic of Strings

Darol Anger

Darol Anger stands at the intersection of the two uniquely American improvisational forms: bluegrass and jazz. An acknowledged pioneer, he blends string quartet with string band, and in the process, has forged some of the most path breaking music of our era.

In the lineage of Stephane Grappelli—the jazz violin godfather was a mentor—and Bill Monroe, Darol’s interests have always been wide-ranging. And now, with Republic of Strings, Darol takes us on a journey to discover the essential commonalities that connect string music.

From Scandinavia to New Orleans—with a dash of Brazil and a dram of Celtic—Republic of Strings explores the very root of world music traditions. A night with Darol and his Republic unites us in melodious storytelling, and celebrates the music that came before, the music that calls us home.

In his 30 years of performing and composing, Darol’s musical collaborations have included the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, Psychograss and Newgrange, the Anger/Marshall Duo, Fiddlers Four, Montreux, Anonymous 4, and influential acoustic guitarist Scott Nygaard, who, with Darol, co-founded the Republic of Strings. Darol’s discography features dozens of recordings with these and other groups. Equally dedicated to mentoring young string musicians, Darol includes Rushad Eggleston, Brittany and Natalie Haas, Jeremy Kittel, Tristan Clarridge and other rising stars in Republic of Strings.

Committed to modern string education, he works closely with the American String Teachers Association and the International Jazz Educators. Honors include composer fellowships from the California Council of the Arts and the MacDowell Colony. He is a contributing editor with Strings Magazine.
